How to use a Purple/Violet Color Booster in a Formula
A “booster” is a pigment‑additive used to tweak or enhance your base color — especially to counteract warm / yellow / brass tones or to enrich violet tones. Here’s how you might use one:
Step What to do 1. Assess your starting hair level & tone The lighter (more blonde) your hair, the more visible the violet will be. If hair is medium or darker, you may need pre‑lightening or expect more subtle results. 2. Decide your goal Neutralize yellow / brass → a violet booster helps. Or enrich a purple shade → gives deeper vibrancy. Knowing the goal helps you pick how much booster to use. 3. Mix booster with your base color Usually you add a small portion of the booster to your base color & developer formula. For example: • If your base color is permanent/demi‑permanent, you mix base color + developer per the instructions, then add booster as a fraction (e.g. up to ¼ of the base amount) depending on how strong you want the violet tone. • For toners or glosses, you might use a booster in smaller amounts since the effect is more delicate. 4. Test strand / patch test Always test on a small hidden strand first. The booster pigment can stain or shift color more than expected. Also test on skin for allergic reactions. 5. Apply & process • Apply mixture evenly from roots to ends (or wherever you want the violet effect). • Follow processing time for base color + add time only if booster instructions allow. Do not just over‑stay thinking more violet will always be better—it may lead to unwanted tones (too purple, muddy, or even blue). • Use the developer strength recommended for the base color. 6. Rinse & treat Rinse until water runs fairly clear. Use color-safe shampoo / conditioner. Deep condition. Violet pigments may cause more dryness or staining, so proper aftercare is crucial.
Tips: Home Use vs Salon Use
Here are things to keep in mind depending on where you’re applying the booster.
Factor Home Use Salon Use Precision of ratio Harder to measure precisely at home. Use scales or measuring tools. Start smaller with booster so you can adjust next time if you want more tone. Stylists have more experience, better tools (scales, precise measuring cups), can more easily test and adjust during the service. Lightening / pre‑color prep If your hair isn’t light enough, the violet booster may not show well. Pre‑lightening may be needed, which can be risky without experience. Stylists can lighten safely, protect hair integrity, and manage porosity for even color. Evenness and application Uneven application (especially on roots vs ends) can lead to patchy violet tones. Mixing well and applying evenly is very important. Pros are trained to apply evenly; they know where hair picks up color differently and can compensate. Risk of overtone / too much pigment At home, it’s easier to leave color on too long or use too much pigment, leading to purple cast or muddy tones. If that happens, you might need clarifying/shampoo‑stripping/toner correction. In salon, they can judge the hair more objectively, adjust timing or dilute pigment if it seems too strong. Aftercare & maintenance Color will fade over washes. Violet pigments especially may wash out or fade into weird tones (blue, grey) if not maintained. Use color‑safe shampoo, minimize heat/styling damage. Salons often provide a treatment plan or recommend products to maintain tone. They might do glosses/toners in between services. Safety & damage If using stronger developers (for lightening) or doing your own pre‑lightening at home, you risk damage, breakage. ————————————————————————————
